Who is the conference for?
This conference will draw together professionals and academic researchers who wish to make constructive contributions to the climate change agenda. Speakers will include:
· policy makers who are shaping future government activity
· venture capitalists who can outline their vision of a profitable yet secure future
· practitioners who are leading the way in delivering carbon reduction
· industry representatives at the forefront of sustainable business
The conference will be of interest to:
anyone responsible for innovation management either in knowledge transfer or research, who wishes to maximise both the opportunity for their own organisation, as well as enabling the wider population to make the changes necessary to secure all our futures. It will also be of interest to business angel funders and venture capitalists, seeking to support the array of innovative projects in the pipeline and the continued existence of the Carbon Connections programme.
Chair
Dr. Ian Gibson MP
Ian has been MP for Norwich North since 1997. Ian served as Chair of the Science and Technology Select Committee 2001-2005 and after a two year sabbatical from select committees he is back on the newly formed Innovation Universities and Skills Committee. Ian is former Dean of Biology at The University of East Anglia where he headed up a research team investigating cancer.
Speakers:
Prof Trevor Davies, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, UEA
Trevor was formerly Dean of the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Before he became Dean in 1998, he was the Director of the Climatic Research Unit at UEA. His research interests are in the impacts of climate change, and in air pollution, transport and deposition. Trevor sees Carbon Connections as an important example of how higher education institutes, with their world-class research base, can form active partnerships with business and government to benefit the environment.
Professor Jianmin Chen, Fudan University, Shanghai, China
Karen Hester, Operations Director, Adnams
Karen Hester joined Adnams from the army as a part-time office cleaner and now, as Operations Director, holds responsibility from quality of product through to delivery to the customer’s door. Karen is also a serving magistrate in North East Suffolk. In 2007, Karen delivered a project relocating staff and product to a new environmentally friendly distribution centre in Reydon, Suffolk. This green building demonstrates Adnams' values and won the National Building Awards ‘Sustainable client of the year’. It has the largest curved green roof in the UK, glulam beams from sustainable forests, lime hemp blocks and a rain water harvesting system.
Andrew Smith BSc MSc FRICS, Head of Estates and Sustainable Development, HEFCE
Andrew joined HEFCE in 1997 and works on the funding of University infrastructure, projects to promote good practice in estate management and advises government and higher education organisations. Andrew is also responsible for HEFCE’s work to promote sustainable development in Higher Education. Andrew recently completed a two year secondment at the University of Bath producing a new estates strategy and working to improve the efficient use of space across the campus.
Alex Thompson, Policy Officer, HEFCE
Alex is Senior Policy officer in the Business and Community Team at HEFCE. She has responsibility for the management of the HE Innovation Fund (HEIF) and funding policies designed to enhance HE’s contribution to economy and society. She also has some responsibility for the Council’s international work. Alex joined HEFCE in 2000, and has previously held a number of posts working with HEIs in London and as HEFCE’s representative at British Council in China.
Donna Young, Head of Climate Change, BT
Donna joined BT in 1991. She worked for 10 years in NPD, marketing, strategy and communications before joining BT Wholesale where she led the Broadband Britain roll out programme. She is currently Head of Climate Change for BT Group CSR and her role is to define the vision and strategy for BT to reduce carbon emissions and then to drive the implementation of that strategy throughout the business. She has been a trustee of KidsOut charity since 2003 and has a Masters from Henley.
Steve Mahon, Chief Investment Officer, Low Carbon Accelerator
Steve was the founder and CEO of the Centre for Sustainable Engineering (CSEng) which is the UK national knowledge hub for innovative and more sustainable technologies, focused on the market adoption and commercialisation of sustainable technologies, products and services.
Low Carbon Accelerator is a closed-ended investment company, which listed on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange (AIM) in October 2006, raising gross proceeds of £44.5 million. LCA’s mission is to provide the capital to accelerate the growth of businesses with products and services that will deliver immediate reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The investment focus is on businesses in the UK, Europe and North America providing products and services in clean energy, cleaner fuels, energy efficiency and building sectors.
Patrick Caiger-Smith, Managing Director, Green Energy Options
Patrick has been MD of four businesses over 15 years mostly in the efficient energy sector. He provides experience in general management, sales management and product development in mechanical and electrical manufacturing businesses.
How to get there:
We would like this conference to have the lowest carbon footprint possible and would therefore like to encourage the use of public transport.
The conference will take place at the RIBA headquarters, 66 Portland Place, London W1B 1AD. The nearest tube stations are Regents Park (Bakerloo line) and Great Portland Street (Hammersmith & City, District and Metropolitan). We are keen to monitor the carbon footprint of the event and so will politely request your travel details upon arrival. We will also be issuing carbon reduction pledge forms.
Additional information:
The venue has wheel chair access, wifi access, a cloakroom which will remain open from 09.00 to 18.30 and an induction loop for the hard of hearing. If you have any further requirements including those of a dietary nature please do not hesitate to let us know.
Terms & Conditions:
1. Attendance Fee
The attendance fee is £50 plus VAT for each delegate. After receipt of your booking request, we will invoice you. The attendance fee must be received by us no later than 14 days after the date of invoice. We reserve the right to reject your booking.
2. Cancellation and refunds
You must let us know in writing that you wish to cancel your attendance before 21 February 2008. Cancellations after this date will not receive refunds but a named substitute may attend instead.
We will do our best to ensure that the conference goes ahead, but we reserve the right to cancel at any time. If we do so, we will refund your attendance fee in full but will have no further liabilities to you. In particular, we will not meet the costs of any pre-booked accommodation or travel.
3. Our Liabilities to You
We will accept liability to you for any death or personal injury caused by our negligence, any fraudulent misrepresentation by us, and any liability which cannot be excluded by law. In no other circumstances will we have any liability to you except as set out in these terms.
4. Guest Speakers
We reserve the right to change the guest speakers and the times of their presentations without notice. The views expressed by any guest speakers are theirs alone, and do not necessarily represent ours. We can take no responsibility for the content or the accuracy of the speakers’ presentations.
5. Data Protection
Your contact details that you provide us with will be used by us and the University of East Anglia for organising your attendance at the conference. We would also like to contact you by post with future updates of the Carbon Connections programme and other events that we may organise. If you do not wish to receive these, or wish to be contacted by telephone or e-mail instead, please contact the Marketing Manager at Carbon Connections. We will not pass your contact details to any other organisation except as described above.
